I was never really fond of sci-fi and always leaned more towards gritty fantasy stuff, so doing this piece was interesting for me to create. I had never done a purely sci-fi project before I started this piece, so I had to do a lot of visual research on what makes a sci-fi scene look, well.. sci-fi.
I started off by blocking the scene, my favorite part. This is the most crucial part of every environment; creating good composition, making sure everything is in scale and getting the rough mood/lighting of the scene. This phase roughly takes 30 minutes to an hour of work.
Slowly adding more elements to the scene, but nothing too detailed yet. I try to focus on modelling the big parts that make up the scene first, then going smaller from there.
Looking better! The small details are always what makes a scene look alive. Vents, panels and wires everywhere.
Here is how the scene looks like in my viewport.
With a bit of tone correction and more lighting changes, the scene is looking much better now.
Slowly adding textures to the scene, one material at a time. I wanted to make sure that all materials looked correctly and have the appropriate specular & normal maps to make it look as real as possible. Another lighting enhancement I made was to make the window on the top left transparent with light leaking out. This added more depth to the scene.
In this update I removed the big bright light and the right hallway and made into into smaller circular lights, then I added holographic displays on the left to make it look more sci-fi. The scene is almost complete now, but I am a bit bothered by the light reflection on the top left window.
Fixed... and done!
